There are plenty of running socks.
Walk into any sports store or browse online and you’ll find hundreds of brands promising blister prevention, moisture management and all-day comfort. Every pair claims to be lighter, softer, more breathable or more technical than the last.
So why would anyone start another sock company?
Because we didn’t think Australia needed another sock.
We thought it needed another way of thinking.
Somewhere along the way, running became about the gear. Running has never really been about the shoes. Or the watch. Or the socks. They’re tools.
The real story happens long before race day.
It’s the 5:30am alarm or the run you squeeze in after work when it’s cold, dark and miserable. The hill session you almost skipped. The recovery run when your legs feel like concrete.
The freezing winter morning (maybe not for Queenslanders 🤣). The hot summer afternoon.
The decision to lace up when absolutely nobody would know if you stayed home.
That’s where runners are made. That’s the grind. Yet somewhere along the way, performance products became more about marketing than performance.
Beautiful videos. Fancy packaging. Buzzwords. Influencers who look great. But very little conversation about how a sock actually performs after 15 kilometres, when your feet are hot, swollen and you’ve still got another hour to run.
We wanted to build something different.
Not another marketing story. A better product story.
We Didn’t Set Out to Replace Every Great Sock
Before GearSocks, we spent years selling some of the world’s most respected sock brands.
And here’s something that might surprise you.
We still do.
If someone walked through our door tomorrow looking for the best sock for a particular adventure, there’s every chance we’d recommend another brand.
Seriously.
We’re not interested in pretending GearSocks is the answer to every question. There are some genuinely outstanding socks on the market.
Competition is a good thing. It gives runners and hikers more choice. It drives innovation. It keeps companies honest. And ultimately, consumers win.
Some of our favourite socks over the years have been made overseas. There’s no denying the advantages. Manufacturing overseas can dramatically reduce production costs. It gives brands room to advertise, sponsor athletes and build global recognition.
There’s nothing inherently wrong with that. Then one trip changed the way we thought about socks.
While hiking through New Zealand’s backcountry, we were testing a range of performance socks from different manufacturers.
Most performed brilliantly. Some quickly became favourites. During that trip we discovered one of the synthetic socks had been treated with an antimicrobial chemical to help inhibit odour-causing bacteria.
Now, plenty of people won’t care about that. And that’s okay.
But it made us stop and think. We all want socks that manage moisture. Reduce blisters. Stay comfortable. Minimise odour.
The question became…
How are they achieving it?
It reminded us of conversations around forever chemicals, food additives and other products that years ago very few people questioned.
Today, many of us do. We simply felt there had to be another way. Then came another moment that really stuck with us.
A customer contacted us after being recommended a lightweight running sock for a 30-day hike across Europe. It was a popular running sock. But it wasn’t a great hiking sock. Long-distance hiking demands different things.
More cushioning.
Different support.
Better protection over uneven terrain.
Running socks and hiking socks solve different problems. It wasn’t the sock’s fault. It was the recommendation. That’s when we realised something.
Too many companies spend their time trying to convince people their product is the best for everyone.
We don’t believe that’s true.
There isn’t one perfect sock. There are simply better socks for different jobs.
If you’re chasing a marathon personal best… Your needs are different to someone hiking Tasmania’s Overland Track.
If you’re racing a fast 5K… They’re different to someone spending ten hours on their feet at work.
That’s why you’ll sometimes hear us recommend another brand. Because we’d rather earn your trust than make one sale. GearSocks wasn’t built because we thought everyone else had it wrong.
It was built because we believed there was room for an Australian-made sock company that obsessed over construction, asked difficult questions and designed products for specific jobs—not marketing campaigns.
Our dinner conversations probably aren’t very exciting. Eventually they always come back to socks. Not because we’re obsessed with socks. Because we’re obsessed with what people do in them.
The sunrise runs. The mountain summits. The muddy trails. The gym sessions. The races. The Hyrox event that cost more than you thought, but you loved it so much. The finish lines.
The ordinary Tuesday mornings when nobody is watching.
That’s what GearSocks is really about.
Built Here. Built Properly.
One of the biggest decisions we made was manufacturing in Australia.
Not because it’s fashionable. Because it gives us greater control. We can develop. We can tweak. We can refine. We can improve. We can test. And if something isn’t right…
We don’t sell it.
That’s what “Built for the Grind. No Shortcuts” means to us.
Manufacturing allows us to work closely, invest in better yarns and continually refine the details that matter.
It also gives us greater visibility over the materials and manufacturing processes being used. We don’t claim to have all the answers. But we’d rather ask difficult questions today than wish we had in ten years’ time.
For us, Australian Made isn’t just a badge. It’s part of the process and it allows us to use your feedback to help refine our products.
Are Expensive Running Socks Worth It?
It’s probably the question we’re asked more than any other.
Our answer? Sometimes.
A higher price doesn’t automatically mean a better product. Likewise, the cheapest option isn’t always good value.
The real question is this:
What are you actually paying for?
If you’re paying for quality fibres, better construction, durability and comfort over hundreds of kilometres, that’s an investment.
If you’re paying purely for branding, or a fancy colour, that’s a different conversation.
Good running socks take time to develop. They require quality materials. Thoughtful construction. Testing. Tweaking. More testing. That’s what should justify the price irrespective of where it is made.
A good pair of running socks won’t make you faster.
Your training does that. Your consistency does that. What good socks can do is remove distractions. Manage moisture. Reduce friction. Stay in place.
The best running socks are the ones you stop thinking about.
Like a good referee. If you don’t notice them, they’ve probably done their job.
Running Socks vs Normal Socks
Can you run in everyday socks?
Absolutely.
People have run marathons in cotton socks. People have climbed mountains wearing equipment we’d never choose today.
The question isn’t whether you can.
It’s whether you should.
Running places unique demands on your feet. Heat. Moisture. Constant impact. Friction. Running socks are designed specifically for those conditions through better fibres, strategic cushioning, ventilation and a more secure fit.
The difference isn’t always obvious in the first kilometre.
It’s obvious in the fifteenth.

How to Choose Running Socks That Actually Work.
Merino, Bamboo or Synthetic?
Another question we’re asked all the time.
The answer is simple. None is universally better. They’re simply different.
Merino naturally regulates temperature, resists odour and excels over long distances.
Bamboo is incredibly soft, breathable and ideal for everyday comfort.
Technical synthetic fibres are lightweight, durable and excellent for high-intensity running.
That’s why we make all three.
Different runners. Different conditions. Different preferences.

Built for the Grind
Our slogan isn’t really about running. It’s about mindset. The grind isn’t standing on the podium. It’s every training session nobody sees. Every early morning. Every late night. Every recovery run. Every interval. Every setback. Every decision to keep turning up.
We don’t believe socks create great runners. Consistency does. Discipline does.
The willingness to embrace discomfort does. We simply make the socks for people who keep showing up. Because performance isn’t built on race day.
It’s built on ordinary Tuesday mornings when nobody is watching.
It’s built in the grind.
