Why We Only Make Socks

Why We Only Make Socks

Nobody grows up saying, “Mum, Dad — one day I’m gonna make socks.” If they do, you book them in for a check‑up.

We didn’t plan it either.

GearSocks kicked off in Melbourne because we realised something very Aussie: the humble sock cops zero respect… until it fails and ruins your whole bloody day.

Spend enough time running, hiking, climbing or just hoofing it from A to B, and you learn a simple truth:

A great sock shuts up and gets on with it. A bad sock will absolutely cook you.

Long before GearSocks existed, we’d already spent decades learning this the hard way — the blisters, the chafe, the “why are my toes crying” moments.

Our founder competed at a national level, which sounds fancy, but honestly it’s just one chapter in a very long book of questionable decisions.

Collectively, we’ve run roads, trails and mountain passes, hiked across continents, climbed alpine peaks, skied powder deep enough to lose a mate in, carried packs that felt like punishment, and chased adventures wherever they popped up.

We’ve trekked the Himalayas, climbed in NZ and Europe, dog‑sledded across Alaska, skied Japan, wandered Tassie’s wild bits, and stomped across more Aussie bushland than a wombat with a grudge.

We’ve lined up at local runs, state champs, national events and mountain races through the Italian, French and Swiss Alps.

Not for bragging rights. Because we genuinely enjoy doing hard, silly, outdoorsy things.

Every kilometre, every climb, every “this was a terrible idea” moment taught us what actually belongs on your feet.

We learned how Merino behaves after days on the trail. We learned where cushioning helps and where it’s just lying to you. We learned the difference between a sock that’s comfy for 5km and one that’s still comfy 50km later.

You can’t fake till you make it. You earn it one blister, one summit, one swear word at a time.

Why We Stay in Our Lane

You’ll never see GearSocks trying to become an outdoor mega‑store. We could make shirts. We could make shorts. We could make backpacks.

But we don’t.

We make socks. On purpose. Because we’d rather nail one thing than half‑arse twenty. Socks are all we do - and we’re bloody proud of it.

We’ve sold, tested and recommended the world’s best sock brands for years. We’ve seen what works, what doesn’t, and why. We don’t chase trends. We don’t stock anything we wouldn’t wear ourselves.

If it doesn’t perform, it gets booted quicker than a P-plater doing 140 on the Monash Fwy.

Better Socks Aren’t Made with Marketing

People ask what makes a great running or hiking sock. The honest answer?

It’s not one magic ingredient. And it’s definitely not whoever slaps the biggest “MERINO WOOL!!!” sticker on the packaging.

If making the best Australian‑made socks was as simple as adding more Merino, everyone with a knitting machine would be doing it.

Performance is balance.

The right fibres. The right construction. The right compression. The right cushioning. The right durability. The right ventilation. The right fit.

Whether it’s running, trail, hiking, walking, Merino or everyday performance socks, every decision has one job:

Make socks that actually show up when things get tough.

Still Putting Them to the Test

We haven’t stopped doing the things that inspired GearSocks.

You’ll still find us at running events around Melbourne and across Australia.

Sometimes we’re chasing PBs. Sometimes we’re rucking with a pack that feels like a bad breakup. Sometimes we’re climbing mountains. Sometimes we’re jogging with mates for a few cruisy kilometres. And sometimes we’re inventing another stupid workout just to see if the sock — and our bodies — can survive it.

Check out our Instagram page and you'll see testing doesn’t finish when the first sample comes off the knitting machine - it finishes when we know it’ll perform for someone else.

Built for the Grind

We’re proud to call Melbourne home. We’re proud to manufacture in Australia. But mostly, we’re proud of the experience behind every pair of GearSocks.

Not because it makes us better. Because it reminds us who we’re building them for.

People who train before sunrise or when the sun sets. People who work long days on their feet. People chasing finish lines. People exploring mountains. People walking the dog. People who just want gear that does what it bloody says.

At the end of the day, that’s all a great sock should do. And then you forget about it.

No gimmicks. No shortcuts. Just socks that work.

Hiking Socks for Altitude

Hiking in the mountains is amazing. Jagged landscapes, peaceful surrounds, but it can come with challenges. Having the right sock is crucial, especially when trekking at higher altitudes.
