The Grind: What Is the Best Sock for running a Marathon?

The Grind: What Is the Best Sock for running a Marathon?

“What’s the best running sock?”

It’s one of the questions we’re asked almost every week.

Whether it’s in our inbox, on Facebook running groups, at race expos or through social media, the questions are remarkably similar.

“What’s the best running sock?”

“What’s the best sock for a marathon?”

“Which socks should I buy?”

Most people expect a simple answer.

Unfortunately…

There isn’t one. The Best Running Sock Doesn’t Exist That probably sounds like a strange thing for a sock company to say.

But it’s true.

Just like there isn’t one perfect running shoe, there isn’t one perfect running sock.

Every runner is different.

Some land on their forefoot. Others heel strike.

Some have narrow feet. Others have feet that seem determined to spread across three postcodes.

Some sweat heavily. Others hardly sweat at all. Some love plenty of cushioning. Others want to feel every contour of the road beneath them.

That’s why the answer to “What’s the best running sock?” is almost always…

It depends.

Running Is Personal

Stand on the start line of any fun run or marathon and you’ll see hundreds of different shoes.

Some runners swear by maximum cushioning. Others race in lightweight trainers.

Some lace their shoes tight enough to stop circulation. Others like plenty of room through the forefoot.

Nobody argues there’s only one shoe worth buying. Yet when it comes to socks, people often expect one magical pair that works for everyone.

The reality is exactly the same.

Your ideal sock is the one that suits your feet, your running style and your preferences.

That’s probably not the answer people want.

They want someone to say, “Buy these and you’ll never get another blister.”

If only it were that easy.

The truth is, your mate’s favourite sock could be your worst nightmare. Feet are different. Running styles are different. Even two runners wearing the same shoes can have completely different experiences.

The goal isn’t to find the best running sock. It’s to find your best running sock.

Why Running Socks Matter More Than Most People Think

Let’s put things into perspective. A marathon is roughly 50,000 steps.

Even a casual 10 km run means your feet hit the ground around 10,000 to 12,000 times. Every single step creates movement.

If your sock moves…

Your foot moves.

When your foot moves…

Heat builds.

Heat creates moisture.

Moisture plus friction…

Well, congratulations. You’ve just started growing a blister. Running socks aren’t magic. But good ones do four very important jobs:

  • Stay securely in place.
  • Manage moisture.
  • Reduce friction.
  • Cushion where it’s actually needed.

When they do all four well, something interesting happens. You stop thinking about your feet altogether. And that’s exactly what you want.

Want to dive deeper into blisters? We’ve put together a complete guide explaining why blisters form, why they always seem to appear at the worst possible moment, and—more importantly—how to prevent them before race day.

Does Sock Material Really Matter?

Short answer?

Absolutely. And if you’re someone who’s thinking - yeah right - socks don’t matter then imagine finishing your run feeling like you’ve wrapped your feet in two damp tea towels.

The material your socks are made from changes how they manage moisture, regulate temperature, feel against your skin and hold up over hundreds of kilometres.

Merino Wool

Merino has become a favourite among runners, hikers and endurance athletes for good reason. It naturally regulates temperature, manages moisture exceptionally well and remains comfortable across a huge range of conditions.

Contrary to popular belief, Merino isn’t just for winter. Quality Merino helps keep feet comfortable on cold mornings and surprisingly comfortable on warm days too.

Bamboo

Bamboo is incredibly soft and many runners simply love the way it feels. If comfort is your number one priority, bamboo is often hard to beat. Many runners with sensitive feet also appreciate its soft feel against the skin.

Synthetic Performance Fibres

Modern technical fibres have improved enormously over the past decade. They dry quickly, provide excellent durability and allow manufacturers to create socks with a very precise fit. In reality, many of the best running socks combine multiple fibres to take advantage of the strengths of each.

Think of it like a running shoe. No manufacturer builds one entirely from foam. The same principle applies to socks.

Still deciding between Merino, Bamboo or Performance fibres? We compare the strengths of each fibre, from temperature regulation and moisture management to softness and durability in our The Grind Series, so you can choose the material that suits your running.

Should You Choose Thick or Thin Running Socks?

Another question you should be thinking about and again…….the answer - it depends.

Some runners love lightweight socks because they feel fast and connected to the road. Others prefer extra cushioning, especially for long runs where comfort becomes increasingly important after 30 kilometres.

Neither approach is wrong.

The important thing is finding enough cushioning for your feet without affecting how your shoes fit.

Remember…

A thicker sock takes up more room inside your shoe. Sometimes people blame their socks for causing blisters when the real problem is that they’ve unknowingly made their shoes too tight. If you’re keen to learn more about why blisters occur this way we discuss that in our ProLab series

Note, cushioning isn’t the only thing that matters. Sock construction, seamless toes and fit all play a role in comfort. Our guide to seamless running socks explains why eliminating pressure points can make a surprising difference over longer distances.

What Height Should Your Running Socks Be?

Sock height isn’t just about fashion (okay it is for some) but the reality is different heights suit different runners.

No-Show Socks

Perfect if you like the minimalist look and your shoes don’t rub around the ankle. These socks sit on or just below the ankle

Mini-Crew Socks

For many runners, this is the sweet spot. Enough coverage to protect the ankle while still feeling light and unobtrusive. These socks sit above the ankle.

Crew Socks

Crew socks have made a huge comeback. They help keep dirt, grass seeds and trail debris away from your ankles while providing a little extra protection higher up the leg. They also seem to have become universally accepted as looking cool again.

Which is fortunate because many of us never stopped wearing them. Love crew socks. I go faster - proven………okay maybe not but the point is I feel better running in them and that psychological benefit can make you faster.

The Biggest Mistakes People Make When Buying Running Socks

After years of talking to runners, we see the same mistakes over and over again.

Buying the Cheapest Option You’ve spent $250+ on running shoes. Maybe another $500+ on a GPS watch.

Then you buy the cheapest socks you can find. It’s a little like buying the best cookware and using home-brand ingredients - you guys know who you are……

The part connecting your foot to your shoe deserves a bit more attention.

Wearing Cotton

Cotton isn’t evil. It’s just not particularly good at running for any distance. Once cotton gets wet, it tends to stay wet.

Wet socks create friction. Friction creates blisters.

It’s not complicated.

Never Replacing Them

Even great socks eventually wear out. Elastic loses its stretch. Cushioning compresses. Fibres lose some of their ability to manage moisture.

If your favourite running socks have celebrated more birthdays than your running shoes, they may have earned a well-deserved retirement.

Choosing the right sock is only half the battle.

Wearing worn-out shoes, poor shoe fit and even tying your laces incorrectly can all contribute to foot discomfort. So if you’re someone who tortures your feet it might be time to look at different lacing techniques in our The Grind series.

Do Expensive Running Socks Actually Make a Difference?

Sometimes.

Sometimes not.

Price doesn’t automatically equal performance. There are expensive socks that won’t suit your feet. There are affordable socks that fit perfectly.

Instead of focusing on price along, think about how they are made. Think of risotto. Plenty of people can make it, but sometimes it’s gluggy, other times it lacks flavour, sometimes the arborio gets stuck to the pan. Making socks is no different. Just because someone can make them, doesn’t mean the result will be good.

My golden rule is if they can last a few hundred of kilometres, prevents blisters and keep me comfortable through my training where I don’t think about them, then that’s good value.

The Sock You Forget You’re Wearing

Over the years—as a runner, coach and admittedly a bit of a sock nerd—I’ve come to one conclusion.

The best running sock is the one you completely forget you’re wearing.

You’re not thinking about your heel slipping. You’re not stopping to pull your sock back into place. You’re not wondering whether that warm spot is about to become a blister.

Instead, you’re focused on your breathing.

Your pace.

The next kilometre.

Maybe even wondering why you thought entering a marathon was a good idea in the first place. That’s exactly how good gear should work.

Quietly. Reliably. Without demanding your attention.

Beware of Simple Answers

Ask online, “What’s the best running sock?” and you’ll probably receive fifty different answers.

The funny thing? Most of them are probably genuine.

Those socks worked brilliantly…

For those runners.

That doesn’t automatically mean they’ll be the right choice for you. Instead of chasing whatever brand happens to be trending this month, ask yourself a few simple questions.

  • Do I get blisters?
  • Do I like lots of cushioning or very little?
  • Do my feet get hot?
  • Do I prefer a firm fit or something softer?
  • Am I running roads, trails or a bit of everything?

Once you understand what your feet need, choosing the right sock becomes much easier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Looking for the right pair? Whether you’re training for your first parkrun or your next marathon, explore our collection of performance running socks designed for comfort, durability and all-day performance.

Do running socks really help prevent blisters?

They certainly can.

A well-fitting technical running sock helps reduce friction, manages moisture and stays securely in place. While no sock can guarantee you’ll never get a blister, choosing the right pair can significantly reduce your chances.

How many pairs of running socks should I own?

Enough that you’re not desperately searching the washing basket five minutes before your run.

We’re in the business of making and selling socks, but the reality is I live by the rule of threes.

Wear one.

Wash one.

One spare.

Keep it simple. Then I rotate my socks every 6 months, but it does depend on how many kms you run. Adjust up and down as needed.

Should running socks be tight?

They should feel secure, not restrictive.

A good running sock hugs your foot without feeling like it’s trying to cut off your circulation.

Can I wear hiking socks for running?

You can wear anything running, but just because you can doesn’t mean you should - remember different socks are knitted for different jobs.

Hiking socks are generally built for carrying weight over long distances.

Running socks are designed for repetitive movement, breathability and keeping your feet comfortable at higher speeds.

Our Philosophy

At GearSocks, we don’t believe we’ve created the perfect running sock.

We believe we’re getting closer with every version.

We listen to runners. We listen to walkers. We listen to hikers. We listen to everyday people who spend hours on their feet.

Every improvement comes from real-world feedback, not a marketing meeting. Because performance isn’t about making the loudest claims.

It’s about making products that quietly do their job while you get on with yours.

Final Thoughts

Not every runner needs the same sock. If blisters are your biggest concern, explore our Blister Prevention Socks. If you’re after performance, browse our full Running Socks collection to find the style that best suits your feet.

If you’re searching for the best running socks, don’t look for the answer everyone else gives.

Look for the pair that suits your feet. The pair that stays put. The pair that keeps your feet comfortable. The pair you forget you’re wearing.

Because when your socks become invisible, you can focus on what really matters.

The next kilometre.

The finish line.

And if our socks help you get there just a little more comfortably, we’d call that a pretty good day’s work.

Stay Moving,

Jake
