Running Toe Socks: Why Your Toes Might Thank You
Toe socks aren't for everyone.
And we're perfectly happy saying that.
They're a little different. They take a few seconds longer to put on. You need to get each toe into its own little compartment, make sure everything is sitting snugly and then you're ready to go.
It's not exactly the sort of thing you want to be doing when you're already late for the train because you will miss it.
Unless you're a jet.
But once you get the hang of them, running toe socks can offer something traditional running socks simply can't:
separation between your toes.
And for some runners, walkers and people who spend a lot of time on their feet, that can make a surprisingly big difference.
What are toe socks?
They're exactly what they sound like. Instead of your toes sitting together inside one section of a traditional sock, toe socks have individual sections for each toe.
Think gloves for your feet, but super thin. A little strange at first? Absolutely. But there's a reason people who discover toe socks often become very enthusiastic about them. Perhaps even protective, territorial or even tribal - yep you better believe it.
Why?
Your toes are no longer rubbing directly against each other. They can move independently, spread out and interact with the inside of your shoe in a more natural way. And that's where things get interesting. Because it turns out your toes have been living together in a tiny fabric apartment for years, and they may appreciate a little personal space. A little like siblings.......we all need our space every now and again.
Why wear running toe socks?
Goodbye, toe rubbing
One of the biggest reasons people try toe socks is simple: toe rubbing.
When your toes are packed together inside a conventional sock, they can rub against each other as you run or walk. Add some firm fitting socks, firmer shoes or toes that, like siblings, like to niggle each other. The end result is often blisters.
Over a short distance, you might not notice.
Over 10km, 20km or a long day on your feet, you might. By giving each toe its own space, toe socks create a barrier between neighbouring toes. That can help reduce the skin-on-skin rubbing that can contribute to irritation and hot spots.
It's not magic.
There's no Turbo Toe Hyper Friction Control 5000 (another BS marketing term we talk about in the best moisture wicking socks).
It's just a sock putting some fabric between your toes. Sometimes the simple answer is the good answer.
Let your toes splay
This is one of the things that can take a little getting used to. With traditional socks, your toes are generally sitting together.
With running toe socks, each toe has its own little section, allowing your toes to spread more naturally inside your shoe.
And there's something strangely refreshing about it.
Your toes can move. They can splay. They can actually feel like toes rather than five passengers crammed into the same seat.cIt's a bit like opening the windows after being stuck in a car with four other people.
Nothing dramatic happened. But suddenly everything feels better.
For runners, that extra freedom can also contribute to a greater feeling of stability and connection with the inside of your shoe.
It's subtle. But once you notice it, you may find yourself wondering why your toes have been living in a sock-shaped sleeping bag all these years.
A little more stability
We're not going to tell you that toe socks will suddenly turn you into an elite athlete.
They won't.
If they did, we'd be wearing them to the Olympics. But there is a quiet confidence that can come from having your toes separated and able to spread inside your shoe.
Your foot can feel more connected. Your toes aren't constantly rubbing against one another. And when you're running, walking or moving over uneven ground, that feeling of your foot being able to do its thing can be reassuring.
It's not about some miraculous performance gain. It's about how your feet feel. And when your feet feel good, you're generally happier. Which is probably why people have been known to become slightly evangelical about toe socks.
"Mate, you have to try these."
We've all met that person.
The trick to wearing toe socks
Here's the important part.
Don't just pull them on and go.
Take a few seconds to make sure every toe is sitting properly inside its section. Get the fabric down between the toes. Make sure there aren't any twists. Make sure each toe feels snug and comfortable.
An obvious one, but cut your nails. For the eagle talons amongst toe socks and long toe nails don't generally mix. You might just go through the sleeve.
Then put your shoes on.
It sounds obvious, but getting this part right makes a big difference. And yes, there is a slight learning curve. Your first attempt may look like you're trying to put gloves on your feet while half asleep.
Your second attempt will be better. By your tenth, you'll wonder what all the fuss was about.
Just don't attempt your first pair while running late to that HYROX class.
Once you've got the technique, it becomes second nature.
And once they're on properly, you can pretty much forget about them.
Which, in our opinion, is exactly what a good sock should do.
Why we made GearSocks Toe Socks
This is where things get a little more interesting.
We wanted to make toe socks in Australia. We tried. We really did.
But there was a problem.
The specialised machinery required to make proper toe socks simply isn't available here.
Toe socks require specialised toe-knitting equipment, and while Australia has a proud history of textile manufacturing, this particular capability isn't something we could source locally. And even if we could you need the engineer to work the machines. That experience just isn't here.
So we went looking elsewhere. And we found a manufacturer that could make them to the standard we wanted.
That's why our toe socks are Made elsewhere.
We're not going to dress that up or pretend otherwise. We'd rather just tell you. Because transparency is more important to us than pretending every product has an Australian flag stitched into it.
But here's the important bit:
Our manufacturing location changed. Our philosophy didn't.
We still believe in paying attention to the details. We still believe in testing. We still believe in using the right materials for the job. And we still believe there are no shortcuts when it comes to making a good sock.
Being Australian owned doesn't mean everything has to carry an Australian Made label. It means we can make decisions here, design products here, test them here and stand behind what we sell.
So we went looking for someone who could make them properly.
And find them we did.
GearSocks Lightweight Toe Socks
Our lightweight toe socks are designed to give you a much more direct, next-to-skin feeling. They're thin. Not thin because we've forgotten to put enough sock in the sock.
Thin because that's the point.
When you're wearing toe socks, we want you to notice the freedom between your toes rather than feeling like you've added a heap of material between your foot and your shoe.
They're made using COOLMAX® fibre, which is engineered to move moisture away from the skin and help it evaporate across the outer surface of the fabric.
In other words, we're trying to manage moisture rather than trap it.
No tea towel effect here.
Because your feet sweat. That's normal.
The objective isn't to convince your feet they've suddenly moved to the Sahara. It's to help manage the moisture so you're not running around with damp fabric stuck against your skin.
Our lightweight range is particularly suited to running and other activities where your feet are working hard.
Our lightweight range is currently available in:
-
Black
-
Grey
Two colours. Because we're making socks, not launching a new car.

GearSocks Merino Toe Socks
Not everyone wants a lightweight synthetic sock.
Sometimes you want merino.
Our GearSocks Merino Toe Socks combine the toe-sock design with the natural characteristics of merino wool, giving you another option depending on the conditions and what you prefer to wear.
They're currently available in black.
Because, let's be honest, black goes with everything.
Even weird toe socks. Especially weird toe socks.

Why GearSocks doesn't need to replace everyone else
We still sell other brands. And we will continue to. There are some very good sock brands out there. They have their place, their strengths and their loyal customers.
We're not trying to replace them.
GearSocks has its place too.
That's actually one of the reasons we started making our own products. After 15 years of selling socks, we've learnt that good socks aren't about having one magic design that works for everyone.
A running sock is different from a hiking sock. A warm winter sock is different from a lightweight summer sock. And a conventional running sock is different from a toe sock.
They're all tools for different jobs.
Making our own gives us another tool. It allows us to control the details, work with specific materials and create products around things we think are worth wearing.
No shortcuts.
No pretending every sock is perfect for everyone. No telling you that our sock will transform your 5km time by 37 seconds - I wish.......
Just another option for people who want to try something different.
Are running toe socks worth trying?
If you've never worn toe socks before, there's only one real way to find out.
Try them.
You may put them on and think:
What the hell are these?
Fair enough.
Or you might take them for a run and discover that your toes being separated, able to move and free from rubbing is something you actually prefer.
They can take a little getting used to. But once you do, there's something pretty satisfying about them. Your toes feel free. Your foot feels more connected.
And there's a quiet confidence that comes from knowing your toes are doing their thing inside your shoes rather than rubbing against each other.
That's the appeal of toe socks.
They're different. They're not for everyone, but neither is sushi.
But for the people who like them, they're very, very good at what they do.
GearSocks Toe Socks.
Different? Yep.
For everyone? Definitely not.
Worth trying? We reckon so.
Wear good socks. Go do good stuff.
