If you’re searching for the best running socks, you probably want to know three things:
Will they protect my feet?
Will they stay comfortable?
And are they worth the money?
Fair enough.
You don’t want to spend $35 on a pair of socks and then discover they’re basically socks with a very expensive opinion of themselves.
So let’s cut through it.
We sell a lot of socks. Running socks, hiking socks, trail socks, toe socks, work socks, diabetic socks and plenty more.
That means we’re not here to tell you that one sock is magically perfect for everyone.
It isn’t.
Different socks for different jobs.
But if you’re looking for a versatile performance sock for running, walking, gym, training and generally doing stuff, the GearSocks Elite is one we think deserves a very close look.
What actually makes a good running sock?
Forget the marketing for a minute.
A good running sock has a pretty simple job.
It needs to:
- Manage moisture
- Protect your feet
- Reduce unnecessary friction
- Stay where you put it
- Fit comfortably inside your running shoes
- Handle repeated use and washing
- And not cost a fortune
That’s about it.
You don’t need your socks to tell you your VO2 max. They don’t need an app. They don’t need Bluetooth.
They just need to work.
And ideally, once you’ve put them on, you forget they’re there.
That’s the benchmark.
So, what are the best socks for running?
There isn’t one running sock that’s perfect for every runner.
Some runners want lightweight socks. Some want maximum cushioning. Some swear by toe socks. Some want Merino. Some run hot. Some run cold. Some get blisters on their heels. Some get them between their toes. Some people apparently enjoy running 100 km through the mountains for fun.
We’re not judging.
The point is that the best running socks depend on what you’re actually doing and what your feet need.
But for a general-purpose performance running sock, there are a few things we’d look for.
Cushioning. Moisture management. Secure fit. Durability. Comfort. And sensible pricing.
That’s where the GearSocks Elite comes in.
Meet the GearSocks Elite
The Elite is our answer to a fairly simple question:
What would we make if we wanted a really good everyday performance sock?
Not the thickest. Not the thinnest. Not covered in marketing buzzwords. Not designed for one incredibly specific activity. Just a properly constructed performance sock that works.
The current Elite is made from:
56% Eco Coolmax™
39% High-Tensile Polyamide
5% Lycra
It’s currently available in a modern no-show design, with a mini crew version coming soon.
And yes, it’s made in Australia. But that’s not actually the most important part. The important part is how we got here.
The first Elite wasn’t good enough Here’s something you don’t hear many brands say.
The first version of the Elite was good. It wasn’t good enough for us. So we changed it. We listened to feedback. Some was positive. Some was critical. Some was probably unfair. Some was downright rude.
But amongst all of it was useful information. And that’s how products get better.
We tested. We changed things.
We tested again. We refined the construction.
We changed materials and manufacturing variables.
Then we tested again.
That’s what our No Shortcuts approach actually means.
It’s not a slogan we invented in a marketing meeting.
It’s what happens when you make something, decide it can be better and go back to work.
You probably don’t care how we make socks
And that’s completely fine. You probably don’t care about needle tension. You don’t care which knitting machine we’re using. You don’t care about the characteristics of different fibres. You don’t care what happens when we change one yarn for another.
You shouldn’t have to and truth be known we don’t care with other products we buy.
All we, as consumers, want to know is will it do what it’s supposed to. I suppose we’re telling you this so you know what makes a good running socks so you can buy right first time.
So what makes the GearSocks Elite a running sock?
1. Targeted cushioning
Your feet take a beating when you run.
Some runners heel strike. Some are midfoot. Some land further forward. Others seem to be conducting a personal war against the footpath.
We’re all different.
So we didn’t want to make a giant, thick sock. Instead, the Elite uses targeted cushioning around the heel and toe areas.
That gives your feet protection where they need it without filling your entire shoe with unnecessary material.
Because more cushioning isn’t automatically better.
If your shoe fits perfectly with your normal socks, you don’t necessarily want to stuff another centimetre of material underneath your feet.
The Elite is cushioned without being ridiculous. That’s deliberate.
2. It helps manage sweat
Sweaty feet aren’t exactly one of running’s great pleasures.
Especially in Australia. Especially in summer.
The Elite uses COOLMAX EcoMade, a moisture-management fibre designed to help move moisture away from the skin.
The EcoMade version also incorporates recycled resources. That’s useful because moisture matters.
Wet skin can increase friction, and friction is one of the ingredients in the blister recipe.
But let’s be honest.
We’re not going to tell you:
“Buy these socks and you’ll never get another blister.”
That’s BS.
Blisters can involve shoes, fit, heat, moisture, friction, distance, training load and your own feet.
Your socks are one part of the equation.
The Elite is designed to help with that equation.
It isn’t magic.
It’s a sock.
A very good sock, we hope.
But still a sock.
3. It stays where it should
There are few things more annoying than a sock that starts moving halfway through a run.
First there’s a tiny wrinkle. Then there’s a fold. Then something starts rubbing. Then you’re thinking about your sock instead of your run.
The Elite has a secure athletic fit designed to stay in place during movement. Because your sock shouldn’t be travelling around your foot independently.
It should move with your foot.
Simple.
4. It isn’t unnecessarily thick
This is worth repeating.
More cushioning doesn’t automatically equal better.
A sock can be wonderfully cushioned until you put it inside your shoe and discover you’ve effectively made your running shoes two sizes smaller.
The Elite sits in the middle. Enough cushioning to protect your feet.
Not so much that you’re fighting your shoes. Protection without unnecessary bulk.
That’s what we’re after.
5. It’s built for more than running
This is one of the things we like about the Elite.
It doesn’t need to be retired the moment your run is finished.
It’s designed for:
Running.
Walking.
Gym.
HYROX.
Functional fitness.
Training.
General active use.
You might run three times a week. Go to the gym twice. Walk the dog.
You want socks that can cope with all of it.
The Elite can.
6. It needs to survive being used
Socks are consumables. Eventually, they wear out.
Every sock does. Your heels hit the ground thousands of times.
Your toes push into your shoes. Your feet move.
You wash them. You dry them. You do it again. And again.
That’s why the Elite combines COOLMAX with high-tensile polyamide and Lycra.
The aim is to make a sock that can handle regular use.
Not one that feels fantastic for five minutes and then starts looking like it has been through a small war.
Durability matters. Especially when you’re spending your own money. For a funny take on how long your socks should last we put together the sock immortality.
What about sweaty, smelly feet?
Let’s deal with this one honestly.
No running sock is going to make your feet completely stink-proof.
You’re still sweating. You’re still putting your feet inside a warm shoe.
And you’re still you. The Elite’s moisture-management construction helps deal with sweat, but basic hygiene still applies.
Wash your socks. Dry them properly. Rotate your shoes. Let them breathe.
And if your running shoes smell like something died in them, don’t blame the socks.
At that point you’ve got a separate biological incident to deal with.
Which running socks should I buy?
This is where things get interesting. Because there are plenty of good running socks available.
We know. We sell them.
We’re not a single-brand sock company pretending every problem can be solved by our own product.
We stock multiple brands because different feet and different activities require different solutions.
Take some very popular brands. They are marketed as performance running socks featuring cushioning, anatomical construction and a seamless toe. Most sit in the $30-$35+ per pair category. They are manufactured in China. Now there’s nothing inherently wrong with manufacturing in China, as very good products are made there.
The question is:
What are you getting for your money? Are you getting value?
We don’t think so which is why we also sell the Gear Socks Elite.
GearSocks Elite vs other running socks
We’re not going to pretend we’ve put every sock on the planet through a laboratory.
We haven’t.
What we can do is compare the features brands offer and focus on the things runners actually care about.

And here’s the bit we really like.
They cost $24.95, but if you buy in bulk they’re under $20 a pair. That’s solid for a performance running sock, irrespective of where it is made.
And if you’ve found a $35 pair and you’re happy buying it then keep buying it.
We’re not offended.
But the idea that a more expensive sock is automatically a better sock?
We’re not buying it. Saving $15 a pair adds up.
The point is that you don’t necessarily need to spend $35 to get a genuinely good performance running sock.
We’re not trying to be the cheapest
There’s a difference between cheap and good value.
Cheap is easy. Make something cheaply and someone will always be willing to sell it for less.
Our goal with the Elite is different.
We wanted to make a proper performance sock at a sensible price.
And manufacturing it here in Australia gives us something we value:
Control. We can change things. Test them. Get feedback. Change them again.
What about blisters?
This is probably the biggest reason people start looking for new running socks.
“How do I stop getting blisters?”
There isn’t one magic answer.
Blisters can be caused by friction, moisture, heat, shoe fit, movement and training load.
But socks absolutely matter.
The Elite addresses some of those factors with:
- Targeted heel and toe cushioning
- Moisture management
- Secure fit
- A smooth construction
- No unnecessary bulk
If your problem is specifically between-the-toe blisters, we’d actually suggest looking at something different.
That’s where running toe socks can make sense.
Different problem. Different sock.
Right sock. First time.
What about long-distance running?
Long runs expose weaknesses quickly.
A tiny wrinkle becomes a hot spot.
A little moisture becomes a bigger problem.
A shoe that feels fine at 5 km can feel very different at 25 km.
That’s why fit, cushioning and moisture management become increasingly important as the distance increases.
If you’re training for a marathon or ultra we have a range of long-distance running socks. Alternatively read our tips for selecting the best marathon running socks in our marathon socks guide.
The Elite can absolutely be part of your rotation.
But again, we’re not going to tell every runner to wear the same thing.
That’s not how feet work.
What about trail running?
Trail running throws a few more variables into the mix. You know the good stuff - Mud, water, rocks, heat, cold, long climbs and long descents.
And the occasional moment when you wonder why you voluntarily chose to run up a mountain.
If you’re spending hours on trails, you may want something specifically suited to those conditions. Mini-Crew or Crew are preferred to keep the trail debris out of your socks.
Remember different socks for different jobs.
It’s one of the things we actually believe.
So, are GearSocks Elite the best running socks?
We’re not going to tell you they’re the best running socks for every runner on the planet.
That would be BS.
But if you want a versatile, cushioned, moisture-managing performance sock for running, walking, gym and general training then this one is for you.
The best running socks are the ones you stop noticing
This is probably the simplest definition we have. Because the best running socks aren’t supposed to be the star of your run.
They’re supposed to do their job and disappear.
That’s what we mean when we say:
Socks that just work.
